The U.S.S. Enterprise is sent to evacuate the population of the planet Sarpedon before its sun, Beta Niobe, goes nova. However, when the ship scans the surface, sensors indicate that no humanoid life remains on the planet. Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy beam down to investigate and arrive inside a huge library, which contains the entire planet's accumulated knowledge; they encounter the tetchy librarian, Mr. Atoz - one of a number of clones - who explains that he has been transferring the inhabitants into the planet's past using a machine called the Atavachron. As Kirk is being shown the device he hears a woman screaming; he instinctively steps through the portal to help her, and is instantly transported back to a time in history fraught with superstition and witchcraft. Meanwhile, Spock and McCoy attempt to follow their captain, but the portal takes them to Sarpeidon's ice age; McCoy almost freezes to death, but then he and Spock are rescued by a beautiful woman named Zarabeth. The three Starfleet officers discover that by standing near the portals they can communicate with each other; however, this only convinces a group of onlookers that Kirk is a witch, and he is thrown into prison. Spock becomes emotional and irrational, finding himself attracted to Zarabeth; McCoy surmises that this time in Sarpeidon's history is linked to Vulcan's primitive past, and realises that he and Spock must return to their own time. However, Zarabeth informs him that the Atavachron has changed their cell structure - they cannot return to the present without dying...
